Kaitlyn Dever Discusses Playing a Notorious Scammer in Apple Cider Vinegar

Kaitlyn Dever joined us to discuss playing infamous scammer Belle Gibson who lied about having cancer in the Netflix series Apple Cider Vinegar. Given the subject matter and the real harm caused by Belle’s lies, she held a lot of reverence in making sure her portrayal didn’t glorify her actions but instead looked at what caused them.

One of the biggest tasks ahead of her in taking on the role was mastering an Australian accent, something she worked closely on with a dialect coach throughout filming. They discussed the details of the specific region together and her dialect coach was on hand to her during every take and scene to make sure they could correct anything along the way if they needed to.

Because the story on screen covers the span of so many years for Belle Kaitlyn enlisted the help of a spreadsheet she created for every scene in which she kept judicious notes on everything from the emotions to the physical differences at each stage. The idea for creating this came from a suggestion made by her sister, and ultimately became something invaluable during filming tp keep track of everything and to always know where she was in the story.
