Wunmi Mosaku on playing Annie in Sinners

Wunmi Mosaku discusses her experience playing Annie in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners and how she loved connecting to the spirituality of the character. Early on she connected with a Hoodoo specialist to really understand this side of her, and the understanding it gave her of Annie and Smoke’s relationship. She describes the power of how her magic managed to protect Smoke all of the time the two of them were apart and how this was part of what kept the two of them connected during this time.

Although Annie had read and. heard tales of vampires it wasn’t something she had seen before and so this shaped the way Annie responded to witnessing this in person for the very first time. Wunmi also speaks to Annie’s decision that she makes early on, that if she gets turned she wants Smoke to take her life. For Annie this was in part because of how she trusts that she will be reconnected with their daughter and ancestors in the afterlife. She found a lot of intimacy existed in their scenes together because of how Ryan Coogler always made sure they could connect and focus on the scene even as there’s a fight breaking out around them.

For the post credit scene she shared with Michael B. Jordan the two of them had conversations which she noted remain private, but that helped the two of them to find what they needed in this moment. She thought very specifcially about the space between the living and the dead between the two of them in this moment.
