Hunter Doohan on the Dark Complexity of Tyler in Wednesday Season 2
In our recent conversation with actor Hunter Doohan, he opened up about his return as Tyler Galpin in Netflix’s Wednesday and how his character’s dark evolution deepens in the second season.
Reflecting on the twist from season one—where Tyler is revealed to be the Hyde monster—Doohan shared how pivotal Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was to building his performance. “It was really helpful to me,” he explained, “especially in understanding the dynamic between Tyler and Christina Ricci’s character, and how controlling that relationship is.”
As season two unfolds, that dynamic becomes even more nuanced. “They’ve locked him away,” Doohan said, referring to the storyline, “and the longer he’s separated from his master, the weaker that bond becomes.” It’s a fascinating psychological thread: Tyler isn’t just battling external forces but also wrestling with his identity and autonomy.
“The main goal for him at the start of season two,” Doohan emphasized, “is to escape—not just physically, but from the influence of having a master. He wants to be free.” This internal conflict adds rich layers to a character who was already shrouded in mystery.
While season one required secrecy around Tyler’s true nature, season two allows Doohan more room to explore. “This time around, we could dive right into the monster side,” he said, hinting at a more action-driven and emotionally raw performance.
Doohan’s portrayal of Tyler is a standout in Wednesday, a show that thrives on reimagining gothic lore with a contemporary edge. With the second season promising more psychological tension and character-driven storytelling, fans can expect an even deeper descent into the fractured psyche of Tyler Galpin.
