Inside ‘The Rainmaker’: Milo Callaghan Talks Auditioning and Becoming Rudy Baylor
In a candid conversation, actor Milo Callaghan sat down to talk about his riveting role in the TV adaptation of The Rainmaker, shedding light on his journey from audition room to embodying the tenacious young lawyer, Rudy Baylor.
When asked about the audition process, Milo smiled: “It was extensive. They put me through the ringer.” But despite the intensity, he felt an immediate pull to the role. “Pretty immediately, I said to my agent when we first got this through, ‘I think I'm gonna do this,’” he recalled. “Not for any grandiose or ego driven reason, I just had this weird certainty.”
That connection to Rudy Baylor deepened as the process unfolded. “Each stage of the audition peeled back a layer. It wasn't just about ‘playing a lawyer,’ it was about uncovering who Rudy is at his core, someone navigating morality, power, and vulnerability.”
Transforming into Rudy required Milo to tap into something raw and real. “He’s someone who doesn’t come from privilege, but he has an incredible sense of justice,” he said. “There’s a lot of him that feels lost at the start of the story, and that’s something I really related to.”
Milo spoke about the nuances of portraying a character who's constantly learning, often the hard way. “He’s not perfect, and that’s the point. He stumbles, questions himself, but keeps pushing forward. That’s what makes him human.”
Talking about working with the rest of the cast, Milo described an almost magical synergy on set. “It felt like we all had this unspoken agreement to keep it grounded. We weren’t trying to make anything flashy — just honest.” He added, “Our director kept reminding us, ‘You don’t have to perform truth — just find it.’ That became my compass for Rudy.”
In speaking to why The Rainmaker resonates, Milo didn’t hesitate. “We’re living in a time when questioning institutions is vital. Rudy’s journey — standing up to a corrupt insurance company with nothing but his integrity — that’s deeply relevant. It’s David versus Goliath, but without the sugarcoat.” He also noted that “At its heart, The Rainmaker is about ordinary people making extraordinary choices. That’s something we need more of.”
