Danielle MacDonald on Stepping Back into Character for Season 2 of The Tourist

Danielle MacDonald joined us to discuss the process she went through to become reacquainted with her character in season two of The Tourist. The new season brought new directors, castmates, settings, and costumes, and Danielle admitted that she had difficulty remembering her connection to Helen after being away for two years. But she was able to use these feelings of detachment to her advantage and channeled them in her acting to portray the difference between reality and Helen’s subconscious in the show.

Since the pair worked together during the previous season, she became more tethered to Helen several weeks into filming when she had her first scene with Jamie Dornan. Danielle noted that she and Jamie share similar work ethics and styles, so they were able to create scenes with big conflict despite being non-confrontational people. In particular, she enjoyed exploring the flipped dynamics between Helen and Elliot and the darker side of her character’s emotions.
