Dexter Sol Ansell Discusses His Journey as Egg in “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”

Actor Dexter Sol Ansell recently shared with us his experiences as Aegon “Egg” Targaryen in the highly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms . Ansell recalled the extensive audition process, which lasted six months and included multiple readings from the film About a Boy.

Ansell also spoke of his bond with his co-star, Peter Claffey, who plays “Dunk.” Ansell mentioned "I felt a connection as soon as I saw him," noting that he genuinely believed Claffey was the best choice for the role. This chemistry has been essential in portraying the duo's dynamic on-screen.

Preparation for the series was a major aspect of Ansell's journey, involving extensive training in horseback riding and combat. Despite the rigorous training, Ansell noted that much of that training isn't showcased onscreen. He also had to adapt to the demanding physicality of certain scenes, including being secured in a harness while filming on a tree. Ansell also touched upon his experience planning to do the entire role in an RP accent to reflect his Targaryen upbringing, but a decision was later made to change that.

Ansell reflected on the transformative experience of stepping into character, especially in the stunning Targaryen costumes that convey a sense of royalty. He emphasized that the growth of Egg mirrors his own development as an actor, both of which are centered on carving out their identities.
